WHAT ABOUT THE BAY AREA?

With its cluster of Michelin-star restaurants, plenty of celebrity chefs, and blessings of the natural environment, the Bay Area's culinary scene is unparalleled. Most notably, the concept of "farm to table" was incepted by Alice Waters at Berkeley's very own Chez Panisse, which set off a movement for greater sustainability and traceability of ingredients. This local characteristic is highlighted at Palette, the restaurant of focus in my research project.

Similarly, there is an undercurrent to the Bay Area's arts and crafts scene that has also undergone transformative and cyclical moments. Movements such as Abstract Impressionism or The Arts and Crafts might come and go, but their philosophies and spirit carry on in the practice and values of artists today. We can also find this in the history of the flower market with Japanese immigration and the ceramics industry with Edith Heath.
